Algeria claimed its second Africa Cup of Nations trophy, 19 years after their first as they secured a 1-0 win against Senegal in the final in Cairo.
Baghdad Bounedjah’s shot took a deflection and looped over Alfred Gomes. The goal was timed at 79 seconds – the fastest in an African Cup final for at least 39 years – and delivered Algeria just a second African title and first since 1990.
Algeria finished the tournament unbeaten. They won all their three group games, won their round of 16 game, drew their quarter final game and won both semi final and final games.
Senegal were awarded a penalty for handball in the second half but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
Aliou Cisse have now lost an African Cup of Nations Final as a player and a coach. Senegal have never won Africa Cup of Nations as the record stands.
